My Favorite Outer Banks Holiday Traditions

The holiday season on the Outer Banks of North Carolina is a magical time filled with unique coastal traditions and festive cheer. I’ve experienced the warmth and charm of these traditions for many years.  Here are some of my favorites that make Christmas on the Outer Banks truly special.

1. The 12 Bars of Christmas One of the most unique and enjoyable holiday traditions on the Outer Banks is the “12 Bars of Christmas” pub crawl. This festive event involves visiting twelve different bars or restaurants, each offering special holiday drinks and decorations. It’s a great way to explore the local nightlife, meet new people, and enjoy a variety of seasonal beverages. The event is often accompanied by participants donning holiday-themed attire, adding to the festive spirit and fun.

2. Neighborhood Light Displays One of my favorite holiday traditions is exploring the neighborhood light displays. Many residents go all out, adorning their homes with elaborate decorations and twinkling lights. Driving through these festive neighborhoods, you can see everything from classic Christmas displays to creative, beach-themed setups. It’s a wonderful way to feel the holiday spirit and appreciate the community’s creativity and effort.

3. Community Parades and Events The strong sense of community on the Outer Banks is especially evident during the holiday season. Towns like Manteo and Duck host festive parades that are a must-see. These parades feature beautifully decorated floats, marching bands, and even Santa Claus himself.  These parades spread holiday cheer and bring the community together in celebration.

4. Winter Watersports For those who enjoy outdoor activities, the mild winter weather on the Outer Banks allows for unique experiences even during the holiday season. One of my favorite traditions is embracing the adventure of winter watersports. From kayaking and paddleboarding to surfing the winter waves, there’s no shortage of ways to stay active and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. It’s a refreshing way to celebrate the season while making the most of the coastal environment.

5. Giving Back to the Community The holiday season is also a time for giving back, and the Outer Banks community is known for its generosity. Participating in local charity events and volunteering opportunities has become a meaningful tradition for me. Whether it’s donating toys to children in need or helping out at a food bank, giving back to the community adds a deeper sense of fulfillment to the holiday celebrations.
